Story a day: 3.23.16

Inspired by a dream. I couldn’t figure out if I wanted it to be a poem or prose, so I just let it sort itself out.

I watched my demon devour you.

I felt him approach, like smelling rain before it appeared. Come back for me again? I could have smiled. Nostalgic for a warm cage of public shame.

I watched my demon devour you.

But he passed by me, uninterested. Was I no longer worthy? Wiped clean, too much soft, doughy space between him and me. And instead he went to you. Sucked the meat from your bones. Left the skin hanging like clothes on a line. Left your eyes dull and inward. Left you worlds away from anyone’s voice. You felt full even as he dragged you into emptiness.

I watched my demon devour you.

And finally I saw what they must have seen when they watched it devour me. The smell of rain soured to car oil.
