Story a day: 6.19.16

The lady required little of me. It made my betrayal that much more biting, for both of us.

“Can you understand?” I asked. I felt a fool as the words flew from my lips, but I could not hold back a final plea as I stood over her.

In response, she raised her arm. A necklace hung around her wrist, the gold charm on it swaying with the motion of her rattling breaths. A circle with a tortoise in it confronted me.

I looked away.
